Here is a bold one: The combatants in the Super Bowl will be the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys, and the Patriots will win.

Why? The Patriots will be there because they are the most prepared in a season where most teams will take an extra two or three games to catch up. Also, with the loss to the New York Jets hanging over them from last year’s playoffs, they will be anxious for payback.

And speaking of the Jets, the Patriots will beat them in the AFC Conference Championship game. This is the way life works. Win a big game unexpectedly one year – lose a similar game the next year.

And who will the Cowboys beat in the NFC Conference Championship game? The underdog of underdogs – the Detroit Lions. Yes, I am predicting that the Lions will catch a few breaks and win a few games.

It would be no fun to pick a rematch of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Packers, even though entering the season, they both look like they could repeat.

Divisional winners in the AFC will be Tom Brady and his New England Patriots in the East, with Mark Sanchez and the Jets being a wild card team from the division. The Cleveland Browns, under the leadership of Colt McCoy, will win the brutal AFC Central division. As always, Payton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts will win the South, and perchance surprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs will win the AFC West. Who will the second wild card team be? The Baltimore Ravens, of course.

Divisional winners in the NFC East will be the resurgent Cowboys, with Tony Romo back in place. The Packers will win the Central, but the Lions will get in thru the wild card. Sam Bradford will lead the St. Louis Rams to a West Division title, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will top off the South. The second wild card team will be the boring old New York Giants.

The Cowboys will be undervalued this year merely because they were overvalued last year. Super Bowl winners from the former year are always overvalued, as are the losers. Conventional wisdom on up and coming supports teams like the Jets, but CW ordinarily is a big miss. This leaves people like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning to lead slow and steady charges through the season and the playoffs.

Trends lead to upsets, and I normally undertake to follow these trends. The Browns could have been 12-4 last year, and while they have new coaches, a new offense and a new defense, it looks gorgeous clear that the new regime is severe with regards to winning sooner then later, and since the Steelers and the Ravens are due for a fall, picking the Browns is not a stretch.

Finally, the Detroit Lions need to fetch it all together. The talent is young. It’s there. Why not this year rather than next?

So that’s it for this year’s predictions. Let’s talk next February and we’ll see if I may do it two years in a row.

If you are expecting uncut versions of the Super Bowl themselves you will be disappointed. This DVD contains 20 half hour television shows created by NFL Films, two from each year of the Super Bowl’s first decade. Each year has two half hour programs dedicated to itself. The first is a recap of the season and the second half hour is a recap of the Super Bowl. The footage is priceless. It’s a great primer to that era of the NFL. You can see the game not only evolve on the field but you can sense the league gain momentum in the annuals of American Culture.

Many reviewers and people I talked to wish the NFL would sell the complete games as they aired on television on DVD and I wish that too. For those who were fooled into thinking this compilation was indeed that, did you not read the box? The entire DVD is just over 10 hours long. In 10 hours you could barely fit 2 and half games!

If you like the NFL and NFL films, you’ll love this box set..

Context is key to success for Super Bowl set

For fans who are very familiar with NFL Films’ Super Bowl highlights after countless marathon viewings right before each year’s big game, the main draw of this five-disc set is having the added context of the annual season-in-review films. The 1966 season isn’t really summarized in “They Call It Pro Football,” the feature preceeding Super Bowl I, but beginning with “1967,” we get some sense of how the conference champions reached the Super Bowl. Also interesting to see are the very good playoff teams that came up short.

Some of the season-in-review films take the straightforward approach of explaining which teams won each division, and briefly recap what happened to the also-rans. This is true of the 1967, 1969 and 1970 features. In other years, the approach is less direct, as a look at the season’s outstanding rookies, strategies or units segues into a discussion of the teams. Key playoff games are generally highlighted, including many classics, such as 1967′s “Ice Bowl” between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, the 1969 Minnesota Vikings-Los Angeles Rams divisional playoff, the Miami Dolphins-Kansas City Chiefs overtime thriller in 1971, and the Dallas-Minnesota showdown in 1975.

The extra features are all very short, and some of them will be familiar to viewers of “NFL Films Presents” and other NFL Films programs.

The Super Bowls themselves are presented in the traditional, effective NFL Films style, making even lackluster contests compelling through thorough explanations of strategy, Sam Spence’s celebrated music scores, and John Facenda’s classic narration.

The fascinating season-in-review footage underscores the need for a comprehensive release of annual highlight films, at least for the dominant teams of the last few decades, as I said in a review of “NFL Films Inside the Vault: Vols. 1-3.” I have not seen the “History Of” DVD sets on the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, but it does appear that these, taken together with the “Super Bowl I-X” set, represent a definite step in the right direction.

Great DVD’s, but lacking a bit.

I’ll try to be quick.

You get the first 10 years. They go through the entire year with a recap of the teams which I did like.

They then show the Super Bowl highlights. I wish they did show the entire game but they don’t. They just show certain key plays which is cool but just not enough for me. That’s what you get. Don’t expect the whole game. Expect what ESPN shows every year during Super Bowl time.

Starting The Business

Like Fred Smith and the origins of FedEx, Philip Knight’s firstborn ideas of what would become Nike Inc. came to him while he was at

school. While working on his master’s at Stanford, Knight – an accomplished runner for the duration of his undergrad days at the University

of Oregon – wrote an essay that outlined a plan to get over the monopoly Adidas had on the running shoe market. He thought the way

to realize this was to apply cheap Japanese labour to make a shoe both better and cheaper.

The plan was put into action shortly after graduating in 1962. Knight went to Japan to meet with the executives of Onitsuka Tiger

Co., a manufacturer of imitation Adidas runners, claiming to be the head of a company called Blue Ribbon Sports (which did not

exist, except in his mind). Knight convinced Tiger to export their shoes to the States though Blue Ribbon and had them send samples

so his associates could inspect them.

Knight paid for the samples with cash from his father. He sent a few pairs to Bill Bowerman, Knight’s track coach from his days at

the University of Oregon, who became mesmerized in the venture. Knight and Bowerman became collaborators and put $500 each into the

purchase of 200 pairs of Tigers. Blue Ribbon Sports was formed, and Knight begun going to high school track and field events

selling the shoes from the trunk of his car.

Sales were at $3 million dollars when Knight chose to dissolve the cooperative relationship with Tiger in the early 1970s. Blue Ribbon started out

producing it is own line and started out merchandising it is Nike line (named after the Greek goddess of victory) in 1972. These initial Nike shoes

were adorned with the now-internationally recognizable swoosh logo – which Knight had commissioned for $35 – and had the

traction-improving “waffle soles”, conceived of by Bowerman while looking at his wife using a waffle iron.

Building An Empire

Blue Ribbon’s success (renamed Nike in 1978) all around the 1970s and into the ’80s may largely be attributed to Knight’s selling

strategy. He thought it best not to push his Nike shoes even though advertising, but rather to let expert athletes endorse his product.

Fortune smiled on Knight as his collaborator Bill Bowerman became the coach of the American Olympic team and a great deal of of the best performers

on the team decisive to shod their feet with Nikes. Of course, when the runners performed well, the shoes they wore were

highlighted. Steve Prefontaine, a brash and unconventional American record-holder, became the initial spokesperson for Nike shoes.

After the tennis player John McEnroe injure his ankle, he begun wearing a Nike three-quarter-top shoe, and sales of that queer

brand jumped from 10,000 pairs to over 1 million. As Knight had hoped, celebrity athlete’s endorsements brought success to the

company. Knight likewise capitalized on a jogging craze, and through clever syndication persuaded the buyer that they ought to only be

wearing the best the best in the world.

The Air Jordans helped the company proceed to thrive into the 1980s. In their initial year, the shoe made more than $100 million.

Knight realized his basi goal of replacing Adidas as the number the one shoe manufacturer globally in 1986. By then, total sales

had surpassed $1 billion. However, by neglecting the growing interest in aerobics shoes, Nike would have to face a few

difficulties.

Through Problems and Controversy

Sales dropped 18% among 1986 and 1987 as Reebok’s trendy, stylish aerobics shoes came to be in high demand. Knight had to

acknowledge that the technical accomplishments of the Nike shoe would not satisfy those who placed aspect above performance. The

Nike Air was Knight’s response to Reebok. It revived sales and put Nike back in the number one spot in 1990.

Corporate Monster that it had become, Nike was the object of public outrage in 1990 when stories of teenagers killed for their

Nikes started out drifting around. It was believed that Nike was encouraging their shoes too forcefully.

That same year Jesse Jackson attacked Nike for not having any African-Americans on it is board or amongst it is vice-presidents, in spite of

the fact that it is client base was in big share black. Jackson’s Nike boycott lasted until a black board fellow member was appointed.

There has also been a controversy around whether Knight’s use of Asian factory laborers as cheap labour s exploitative.

Through all of the bad press that has been foisted on Nike through these events, Nike shoes have continued to trade well. And in

1993, The Sporting News voted Knight “the most powerful man in sports” even though he was neither a player nor a manager. Knight’s

marketing mastery is to be lauded and regarded as a major element in his impressive successes.
