After more than a century of a cities evolution the game of baseball came full circle when the Mets and Yankees met each other in the 2000 MLB World Series. The firstborn year of a new Millennium involved the most stories franchise in baseball history versus it is cross city rivals the New York Mets. With the Mets and NY Yankees both attempting to scratch their way through the season to reach the playoffs not anyone would have believed that they both would reach their uttermost goal, which was to play in the World Series. The Yankees were endeavoring for a third successive World Series championship which had not been achieved since the Oakland A’s dynasty of the early 70′s. They Yankees jumped out of the gate and got off to a 22-9 start. However, the rest of the season didn’t go rather so smoothly. They played incisively .500 baseball the rest of the season. In fact, they stumbled into the playoffs on a 7 game losing streak. In the National League, the New York Mets started out the season going a mediocre 20-20. In July they started to make their run towards the pennant. In September they only owned a share of original place for one day before the Atlanta Braves won their 9th straight division title. The Mets went on a roll once they reached the playoffs so the stage was set for a showdown of two teams from the Big Apple fighting for the extreme prize in baseball, a World Series title! Game 1 was a marathon that lasted over 4 hours and went 12 innings.The game ended when weak hitting Jose Vizcaino got a base hit with two outs. In game two, the Mets proved that they weren’t going to go down easily. They were getting blown out 6-0 in the ninth inning and started a rally. They scored five runs, but fell just one tally short of tying the game and setting a Major League Baseball record for comebacks in the ninth inning. The last three games were filled with tension and intrigue. The Mets won game three, 4-2. Game four went to the Yankees with the score of 3-2, and the Yankees closed out the series by winning the fifth and final game 4-2. The Subway Series was a struggle not only amongst the players on the field, but amongst the fans in the seats. Cross town rivals battling to the end. |
